LORETO CHAPEL HISTORY

When Loreto moved from Norwood to The Acacias, Marryatville, in 1921, Sir Edwin Smith’s beautiful dining room was chosen as the chapel. However 20 years later it was much too small for the needs of the community and school, and an appeal was made for funds for a new Chapel.

At the end of the Second World War finances were very limited and building was not possible so it was decided to transform the large Ballroom built by Sir Edwin into a Chapel which was opened in 1946. The musicians’ alcove provided a raised area for the sanctuary, Queensland maple benches and altar rails were installed, and deep amber leadlights in the windows together with the original musical motifs on the ceiling lent a prayerful atmosphere.

With changes after Vatican II and the needs of increasing numbers of students, greater flexibility was required so the heavy benches gave way to chairs, the old wooden altar was replaced and the tabernacle moved to the side. The Chapel is used for a weekly Mass and small prayer groups of present students and staff. It is also available to Old Scholars for their gatherings, including weddings. The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary community, although no longer resident on the property, still treasure this Chapel and use it for their own special celebrations.
