Loreto Junior School, chess is offered as an extra-curricular activity to students in Years 3-6. Chess sessions are run at lunchtime by experienced coaches from Chess Kids. Each chess class begins with a coaching session and then each girl plays off against another girls of similar ability in a Swiss Tournament.

Students are also encouraged to participate in chess tournaments held at other schools and venues in the region.

Chess develops skills such as problem solving forward planning, lateral, logical and sequential thinking as well as memory. These cognitive skills are developed in a highly engaging environment. Learning while playing!

"Chess is one of the most effective teaching tools to prepare children for a world increasingly swamped by information and ever tougher decisions."
- The Case for Chess as a Tool to Develop Our Children’s Minds, Dr Peter Dauvergne, University of Sydney, July 2000.
