Fifty Years of Transformation: Education in a Changing World

As part of the 50th anniversary edition of The Independence magazine, Loreto College Marryatville Principal Kylie McCullah reflects on the transformation of education over the past half century – framed through the extraordinary career of Mr David Hall, who has served Loreto College for nearly five decades.

From chalkboards and typewriters to digital learning labs, and from rigid academic pathways to personalised support and inclusive programs, education has changed dramatically. David’s recollections highlight how far we’ve come in technology, curriculum, wellbeing, governance, and facilities, while also affirming the enduring spirit of Loreto: community, care, and a commitment to excellence.

Wellbeing now sits at the heart of education, embedded in Loreto’s SEAD program, ensuring students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally. Yet some things remain constant: the relationships formed, the sense of belonging, and the values that continue to inspire strong, passionate, and confident young women.

As Loreto celebrates 120 years of educating girls, this reflection reminds us that while education will continue to evolve, our purpose remains unchanged: to nurture, empower, and inspire generations to come.
